Set your calendars: On July 31, the Red Bull Art of Can exhibit will open through August 22 at Galleria Dallas. Featured artists range from high-school students to fashion designers and trained artists and were selected by judges including Tammy Theis, Jason Sheeler and Gail Saschson. The exhibit features more than 50 works of art, including an evening gown and a life-size airplane.
A VIP Gala event will take place on Saturday, July 31, and will be hosted by Steve Kemble at the Westin Galleria Dallas. Weekend To-Do: Dallas Film Fest “Bill Cunningham NYC”
Celebs, directors, writers, producers, talented newcomers and all the movie biz pros came out to the opening night of the fourth annual Dallas International Film Festival, formerly AFI, last night at the Angelika. I look forward to this event every year and have had it marked in my planner since they announced the dates almost a year ago. The festival, previously associated with the American Film Institute, is for its first year independent. Without the backbone of AFI, many film followers have been weary of the success and turnout of the cultural contribution that is insurmountable to the growth of Dallas arts, but the atmosphere and crowd of the opening night showed no sign of any blunder.
I had the opportunity to checkout the second ever screening (the first was last week at the MOMA in NYC) of the documentary directed by Richard Press “Bill Cunningham New York.” I am a little bias, because I went into the film already being a huge fan of the iconic New York Times fashion and street style photographer (I rip out his “On the Street” column and hang them on my desk bulletin board), but for those who have no idea who Cunningham is you will still be in absolute awe of the quality of the documentary and the story it shares. The documentary follows the 80-year-old photog as he finds beauty in everything from the homeless bag ladies of New York to the glamourous drenched in diamonds socialites. Where sometimes documentaries struggle to find an emotionally engaging story line, “Bill Cunningham New York” takes you into the extremely private personal life of photographer – an inspiring life of desired simplicity (he lives in an apartment the size of my car and eats $3 meals) counteracted by his opulent society column subjects. The film screens only one more time at the festival, tonight at 7pm at the Dallas Museum of Art’s Horchow Theater. It is just beginning the film fest circuit, therefore it could literally be forever before it returns to Texas… so DON’T miss it!

Weekend To-Do: Dallas Art Fair
Art fans are flocking to Dallas for the second annual Dallas Art fair this weekend. More than 50 exhibitors from across the United States and Great Britain will be showcasing their modern and contemporary art collections at the Fashion Industry Gallery in downtown Dallas. The venue, located in the Arts District directly across from the Nasher Sculpture Center and the Dallas Museam of Art, will be transformed into a mall of individual galleries featuring post war paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints and photographs.
The most anticipated display was created by native Texan and now New York based artist Rachel Hovnanian. Her installation, titled the “Power and Burden of Beauty,” explores the stereotypes of beauty in society, with a heavy focus on Texas culture, through sculpture, paintings and multi-media platforms.
The inaugural Dallas Art Fair drew over 5,500 guests in February 2009, and the two-year-old event is already being compared to a miniature version of the chic and hip Miami Art Basel.
Galleries that will be joining the 2010 Dallas Art Fair for the first time include Babcock Galleries, New York; D’Amelio Terras, New York; Hedge, San Francisco; Stuart Shave/Modern Art, London; and Timothy Taylor Gallery, London.
Among the returning galleries are Andrew Edlin Gallery, New York; Anthony Meier Fine Arts, San Francisco; Dunn and Brown Contemporary, Dallas; James Kelly Contemporary, Santa Fe; Jason McCoy, Inc., New York; John Berggruen Gallery, San Francisco; Lora Reynolds Gallery, Austin; and William Shearburn Gallery, St. Louis.
The fair will be held this Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. providing an ideal weekend outing for any art collector, enthusiast, or student. Student one-day passes are $15. For more information visit DallasArtFair.com

Weekend To-Do: The Dallas Flea
SMU Alumna launches trendy flea market featuring local artisans (SMU Daily Campus)
Brittany Edwards has assessed and analyzed design and style for the past several years. Since graduating from SMU in 2005, Edwards has worked as a fashion reporter for The Dallas Morning News, freelanced in New York City with everyone from Forbes to Lucky, and now is back in Dallas working as Daily Candy‘s Dallas editor.
After growing up in Southern California and experiencing the melting pot of New York City, Edwards realized she was missing something: flea markets. Edwards was determined to bring the flea market experience to Dallas. She started brainstorming in September, and by October was planning The Dallas Flea.
“I decided to do a flea market after frustration really,” Edwards said.
As the Dallas editor for the popular Web site DailyCandy.com, Edwards writes and reports daily on style, food, fashion and fun. Read More
Weekend To-Do
I kid you not, this weekend may be one of the greatest weekends. Labor Day just oozes greatness as it means no classes Monday, and it’s your last chance to wear white. So you best take advantage.
Friday Shop Date: First Tailgate of the year is Saturday, which means your closet is lacking one thing: a cute white dress. Find it in advance on a Friday shop date. The best news? Most white apparel will be draped over the sale rack since we’re in-between seasons, and after Saturday, all-white ensembles are far less fashionably acceptable. Check out Banana Republic at West Village or Highland Park Village for steals. I recently found a cute dress at the West Village location for $30 (marked down more than 50 percent.)
See You At The Boulevard: …but before I see you there, a brunch is a must. Bread Winners on McKinney is a staple in my brunching duties, but watch out for a long wait Saturday morning. If you’re needing a quicker fix, or a breakfast taco or two, head to Mattito‘s in Uptown — their patio is large and the inside space is even bigger, making your chances of a quick seat that much better. Then, I’ll be seeing you at The Boulevard, donning a white dress of course. We’ll be on the lookout for chic fashionistas to be featured on next week’s Spotted blog.
Sunday Funday: Love is too weak a word for the feelings I have for Sundays. Especially this one. Head to the House of Blues Sunday night and catch the simply amazing Paolo Nutini (set your iTunes to “Candy,” off his new CD “Sunny Side Up”). Tickets start at $17 for general admission, standing room only, or $12.75 each for a pack of four. I’ll see you there in the front row, at 8 pm sharp.
